Leech Tishman Partner Steve Irwin Receives North American Securities Administrators Association Blue Sky Award
PITTSBURGH, PA– Leech Tishman is pleased to announce that firm partner Steven D. Irwin has been honored by the North American Securities Administrators Association (“NASAA”) with its prestigious Blue Sky Award during the association’s 96th Annual Conference held in Salt Lake City, UT on October 7, 2013. Steve currently serves as a Commissioner of Banking & Securities for the Pennsylvania Department of Banking & Securities. He was the past President of NASAA and member of the organization’s International Board and currently chairs NASAA’s Federal Legislation Committee. At Leech Tishman, Steve chairs the firm’s Government Relations Practice Group. For over a decade, Steve served on Leech Tishman’s Management Committee and led the firm’s Employment Practice Group.
NASAA’s Blue Sky Award is the association’s highest honor and recognizes career achievement as well as distinguished contributions to securities regulation. The award is named after state securities laws, which are commonly referred to as “blue sky” laws. The first modern state blue sky law was adopted in 1911 in Kansas. The Kansas law served as the nationwide model for state securities regulation.
In presenting the award to Steve, NASAA stated, “You have served investors in Pennsylvania and throughout North American with great honor and distinction during a NASAA career that has earned the deep respect of your colleagues. Throughout your service to NASAA you have proven yourself one of our association’s more thoughtful, selfless and determined members whether as President-elect, a member of the Board of Directors, Chair of the Federal Legislation Committee, Vice Chair of the Enforcement Section Committee or member of the Dodd-Frank Working Group. Your astute political instincts and wide breadth of securities-related knowledge enabled NASAA under your guidance to develop a legislative agenda that expertly enhanced investor confidence by striking the most reasonable balance between promoting capital formation and protecting investors. Your compassion for the underserved and exploited fostered an environment that prizes investor education and uses it to its fullest to advance the protection of all investors. Your integrity, grace and sound approach to responsible and reasonable regulation represents the best in public service and we, the membership of NASAA, are proud to present with deepest respect, our highest honor to Steven D. Irwin, one cubic foot of Kansas blue sky.”
An active and committed advocate on issues involving investor protection, Steve has testified before the House Subcommittee on Capital Markets and Government Sponsored Enterprises regarding NASAA’s opposition to the creation of a self-regulatory organization for investment advisers. During NASAA’s 2011 Annual Conference, Steve was recognized with an Outstanding Team Service Award for his valuable contributions to the NASAA Dodd-Frank Studies Working Group, ensuring that NASAA was an active and insightful participant in the study and rule making phase of the Dodd-Frank Act implementation process.
“It is an honor to serve the community by working to protect consumers who purchase securities and investment advice,” said Steve. “Serving in these roles for NASAA and the Pennsylvania Department of Banking & Securities has given me the opportunity to stay at the forefront of the ever-changing landscape regarding investor protection.”
Organized in 1919, the North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA) is the oldest international organization devoted to investor protection. NASAA is a voluntary association whose membership consists of 67 state, provincial, and territorial securities administrators in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Canada, and Mexico.
