Harry’s best-selling book, The United States of Opioids explains how and why the opioid epidemic became America’s greatest self-inflicted wound, a slow-motion mass casualty event resulting from tragic mistakes, Nelson goes beyond the wanton greed of pharmaceutical manufacturers to focus on the blindness of insurance companies and government among multiple points of system failure.
Government regulators and policymakers have turned to Nelson to advise on the most sensitive and challenging emerging health policy issues. He was one of the first lawyers in the country to develop a framework for compliance in cannabis, helping to shape California law and pushing for expanded clinical research on other plant-based controlled substances, and continues to play a leading role in the expansion of telehealth and machine learning in medicine.

“We are locked in a system that makes it impossible for critical research to happen,” says Nelson. “We have researchers and scientists who are eager to do research into these alternative medicines, but they are scared of jeopardizing federal funding.” Any research into these medicines needs to be approved by the DEA, and getting that approval is so difficult, Nelson says, that many institutions don’t bother.
