Healthcare Chair and firm Partner Harry J. Nelson recently appeared on the Bloomberg Law Podcast episode titled “Trump Takes Over DC & Tariffs on Drugs.” In the episode, Nelson discussed President Trump’s proposed pharmaceutical tariffs, their intended purpose, and their potential impact.
Nelson explained that the proposed tariffs, which could be as high as 250%, are designed to “force drug companies to build infrastructure in the United States to ensure access to the drug supply and prevent disruption.”
However, Nelson said that if the full 250% tariff is implemented, drug prices could increase by as much as 25 times in the short term. He finds that the main concern is who will bear the burden of these increased costs. “If you’re a hospital, for example, and you need to buy injectable drugs to have the inventory for when patients need particular drugs or cancer drugs, the question is: who’s going to pick up that cost?” Nelson notes.
