Harry J. Nelson, Healthcare Chair and author of The United States of Opioids, was recently interviewed in a Forbes Breaking News segment titled, “‘FBI Investigation Into Jim Irsay’s Death Seems to Have ‘The Hallmarks’ Of Matthew Perry Case.” The segment discusses the investigation into the May 2025 death of Indianapolis Colts owner, Jim Irsay, and the California addiction doctor who treated him.
Nelson explained that the government has a longstanding pattern of focusing on high-profile cases to encourage greater scrutiny of provider behavior. He noted, “Doctors have the freedom and the judgment to prescribe opioids, even to somebody who is addicted, but they are doing so in a situation of enormous risk, and they’re supposed to be doing so with a heightened degree of care and conservatism.”
