Update: Deadline to Pay Federal Income Tax Owed and File Federal Income Tax Returns Extended to July 15, 2020
Following recent announcements by U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, Tax Day for federal income tax purposes has been changed from April 15 to July 15, 2020. All taxpayers now have until July 15, 2010 to file their tax returns, as well as to pay any federal income tax owed, regardless of the amount, without penalties and interest.
This deadline extension is automatic, so taxpayers do not need to file any additional forms or call the Internal Revenue Service to qualify for this federal tax filing and payment relief.
State Deadline to File and Pay
Please take note that this extension does not affect the deadline for paying state and local income taxes or filing state and local income tax returns. Until there is an official announcement by your respective state or local taxing authority, assume that the deadline remains the same (of the 43 states with an income tax, all but five have an April 15 deadline).
As of the date of this publication, Pennsylvania, New York, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico are the first states to mirror the federal government in pushing tax filing due dates from April 15 to July 15, in addition to waiving penalties and interest for late tax returns and payments.
